A lot of us need help in the weight department. Look around you. Up to 25 percent of our children and almost 50 percent of adults in America are currently overweight. And those are light estimates!

Losing weight and looking good have become important elements of success in the industrialized world. Dr. James Dobson, a Dallas therapist, discovered women who looked trim and fit in a business suit found it easier to land a job than overweight women wearing tent dresses. Even though some of these large women were talented and skilled, they remained chronically unemployed.

Daniel Hamermesh at the University of Texas conducted a study that ascertained attractive people earned 5 percent more than average or unattractive people.

Psychologists have determined weight gain or loss can profoundly affect a person’s self-esteem. Self-image often becomes a synonym for self-esteem. Too often people become unhappy or depressed when they eat too much and notice changes in their shapes. The scale suddenly becomes a caustic critic, eroding their self-confidence.

I know. I’ve been there.

My story sounds like the front page of the National Enquirer. At age 39, I participated in an experimental nutritional study in Dallas called MELTDOWN! The goal was to return the body to biochemical equilibrium so that participants could raise their metabolism, which is a biochemical prerequisite for losing weight.

After a TMA, a simple diagnostic test in a federally licensed clinical laboratory, I received a six-page eating plan that was updated every 90 days. I followed the eating plan religiously. I was determined. I had a tenacious resolve.

I ate five times a day, but I never counted calories. I gobbled real food, not those yucky protein shakes or that tasteless rabbit food. And those unwanted pounds — the ones I had been trying to lose for years — melted away while I slept!

It took 13 months for my body to return to equilibrium. (But remember, I was the worst case scenario. At least half of my clients have lost one pound or more within the first 24 hours of their tailor-made MELTDOWN! eating program.)

I’d like to describe myself to you. I didn’t have chunky thighs because I sat around on my ass-sets all day. I teach the power step aerobics class at Bally’s and do weight training on the days I don’t teach. My biceps muscles bulge; my deltoid muscles have definition. I have a toned physique. Some call me an exercise fanatic. I was so firmly devoted to an exercise regimen that I jogged three miles the day I delivered my son! Yet, until I began using the MELTDOWN! secrets, very few fat cells on my thighs melted away.

But soon after my 40th birthday, I lost four inches off each thigh, which had bulged on every female in my family for four generations. (And probably more, since I never met my great great grandmother.) And I shed all this hated body fat in just 92 days after I returned to biochemical equilibrium!

I had been trying to lose those pudgy thighs for what seemed a lifetime. I tried every fad diet. But nothing worked — until I understood how my body worked. Then, by eating right and exercising correctly, my thighs just melted away — easily — eating more and working out less!

Six months after I shrunk my thighs, I woke up and my breasts were sore. I immediately called my gynecologist, worried he’d tell me the words no woman ever wants to hear. I mentally prepared myself for his announcement that I had no choice but to face a double mastectomy. Instead, after a thorough breast exam, he informed me my breasts were growing! Facing menopause, I suddenly felt like I was going through puberty! (This, by the way, was not a goal of the MELTDOWN! study.)

My breasts have already doubled in size, based on a recent mammogram. My body is redistributing my fat, robbing fat from my unsightly thighs and putting those cells in my breasts. Not through surgery. Not through chemical intervention. Naturally! This is possible because, for the first time in my adult life, my endocrinology has returned to normal.

I am a member of the second class of women to graduate from Yale University (1974) as well as a graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (1975). With two Ivy League degrees, I am a well-educated businesswoman who knows better than to believe in black magic. This, however, is pure science!

The key to my instant weight loss was knowledge. I had to shed some ignorance first before I could shed any weight. This ignorance would have kept my thunder thighs a permanent part of me for the rest of my life, just as it has for millions of people everywhere.

This book is a scientific primer designed to explain the inexorable laws of endocrinology to you. You need to understand these laws if you are going to MELTDOWN! to your ideal shape.

However, there’s only one simple fact you need to know, boys and girls, if you want to lose weight. Here it is again, in black and white:

It is impossible to lose any significant amount of weight permanently if your biochemistry is not in balance. You must first return to biochemical equilibrium before the weight melts away.

The theory behind my remarkable weight loss — and yours — is simple: If you understand how your body functions, you can use that knowledge to let your body do the weight reduction work for you. You can literally correct your weight problem from the inside out.

MELTDOWN! has four parts. Part 1 outlines the scientific portion of the program. It clearly explains what to eat, how to eat and why this plan works biochemically. It is a biology lesson. It is pure science.

Part 2 discusses the mental preparations necessary to follow the eating plan. You’ll learn how to keep the dietary terrorist inside you at bay. You’ll use 21st century neuroscience to achieve your weight loss goals.

And then, once you have returned to biochemical balance, you will learn a mental strategy to make that weight loss permanent. You will learn how to eat like a naturally thin person.

Part 3 discusses an exercise program that turbocharges the MELTDOWN! eating plan.

Part 4 is the cookbook. You’ll learn how to prepare food properly following these new tenets. I’ve prepared every one of the recipes myself, so they are tasty.
